Delayed till she had ceased to know by Emily Dickinson

DELAYED till she had ceased to know,
Delayed till in its vest of snow
  Her loving bosom lay.
An hour behind the fleeting breath,
Later by just an hour than death,—        5
  Oh, lagging yesterday!

Could she have guessed that it would be;
Could but a crier of the glee
  Have climbed the distant hill;
Had not the bliss so slow a pace,—        10
Who knows but this surrendered face
  Were undefeated still?

Oh, if there may departing be
Any forgot by victory
  In her imperial round,        15
Show them this meek apparelled thing,
That could not stop to be a king,
  Doubtful if it be crowned!

This is emily dickinson as a younger girl..

How does this poem make you feel?!
This poem seems like its talking about a failed attempt at something in life. perhaps even someone. im not really sure how it makes me feel, how does it make you feel? Maybe even referencing not being appreciated until its too late?!

  1. We always want what is beyond our reach, this poem makes me feel hungry but my fridge is so very far away

  2. This makes me think of aiming for something that is just out of reach. Quite a depressing feeling really.

    Very beautiful.

Thank you so much for dropping by my blog today :)
Yes please share the poem about Laughter .
It was an odd clipping I found and had saved for some reason which turned out to be today!
My day had gotten off to a horrible start .
First I had a ride to work than I didn't,than I did and than again I didn't and I was in a panic trying to figure out what to do .
Neither cab ,nor bus run in the direction where I work part time.
So I chose to post something to yank myself out of the moment and be able to trust that something would work out and it did.
And at the end of the work day I got a ride home from an unexpected source a very kind customer went way out of their way to take me home :)
Your choice of poetry was very thought provoking ! Thank you for the share.
I felt like I did when I think I am finally going to make it to the top of the hill only to trip and roll down again getting bruised and banged up along the roll down hill.
The thing is in real life I have to sit ,rest and than shake off the dust ,endure the pain and climb again to reach the top no matter how many times I roll down .Each fall gives me a better insight as to the terrain I am trying to climb .
    Hugs from Texas
    Until Next Time
    Happy Trails

  12. One of her best, IMHE

and like most Emily D---about meeting Death, and the implications thereof.

(btw, poemgal, don't mistake that loud hack Kirby Olson for a legitimate lit-type, s'il vous plait. He's merely another biblethumper, Foxnews quoting yokel, regardless if he passed a John Donne for White trash course. :])
