A Dream within a Dream by Edgar Alan Poe

A Dream Within a Dream
Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow --
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if Hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand --
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep -- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

by Edgar Allan Poe
Poetry of the day REVIEW:
I think this man realized the self similar nature of reality. Reality is just a dream with in a dream with in a dream, and when you die, you will continue to dream, and continue to exist in this continuous dream.

BTW!!!

WORD OF THE DAY IS:

jobbery

   JOB-uh-ree  , noun;
1.
The conduct of public or official business for the sake of improper private gain.
USE IT!

  1. Cook County jobbery
    is tantamount to robbery.

Quite amazing that the Poe piece still seems good after reading Dr Suess.

I can't help regretting that I didn't read it before "Green Eggs & Ham".

  4. I always found Poe to be a pretty weak poet compared to his stories. Though on that topic it's amazing how everyone views him as a horror writer when a lot of his "horror" stories are actually just grotesque comedies.

  18. @lazeitao - Err, me thinks you missed the part where it was by Poe. There was a picture of him in the middle and everything.

Unless, you know, you have really bad eyes.

  22. Poe was the first well-known American to try to live by writing alone - a career not helped by the petty jobbery of American publishers.
